How to Play

How to Play Rummy Card Game Online?

Knowing how to play rummy can be incredibly beneficial as it will help you play the game in the right manner. The rules of the game of rummy are relatively simple, and you need to organize all the cards in your hand to form a minimum of two series, out of which one must be a pure sequence. The rest of the cards should be arranged in valid sequences or sets.

You can easily follow these simple rummy rules and instructions to play the game from start to end without the slightest margin of error. These are:

1. The Rummy card game is usually played between 2 to 6 players with 2 decks of cards. Each player in the game is dealt with 13 cards, and a random card is selected as a Wild Joker or Joker card.

2. The player has to draw and then discard cards to form valid sets and sequences of the 13 cards in hand, where they can also use Wild Joker or Printed Joker of the deck to make an impure sequence and sets.

3. As per the Indian rummy rules, once a player arranges 13 cards in 2 valid sequences, comprising 1 pure sequence and more groups (sequences or sets), one can make a declaration and win the game.

Essential Tips to Win Online Rummy

It is incredibly crucial to know the rummy rules, to play carefully and in a focused manner. Here are some quick tips to win the rummy card game and stay a step ahead of your opponents.

1. Form the pure sequence right at the very beginning of the game.

2. In the absence of a pure sequence, a player cannot make a declaration.

3. Discard cards that have high points like Ace, Jack, Queen, and King. Replace these particular cards with Joker or Wild Cards to reduce the point load in situations if you lose the game.

4. Avoid picking cards from the discard pile as much as possible. It tells what hand you are trying to create.

5. Look out for smart cards. For example, 7 of any suites can work with 5 and 6 of the same suit and 8 and 9 of the same suit.

6. Jokers play an important role in rummy. Try using them to replace high-value cards. Remember that, Joker and wild cards cannot be used to form a pure sequence.

7. When you are confident and ready to make a declaration, check and recheck your cards and press the button. An invalid declaration can turn even a winning game into a complete loss.

Discover the Rummy Rules to Play the Game Like a Pro

Rummy is a card game in which a player tries to improve the hand initially dealt. They can do this whenever it’s their turn to play, either by drawing cards from a pile or by choosing the card thrown away by your opponent and then discarding a card from your hand.

The Objective of Rummy

The objective of the game of Rummy is to put (or meld) your cards into two types of combinations:

The fundamental goal in any form of Rummy is to build melds consisting of sets, three or four of a similar rank, or runs, three or more cards in sequence, that belong to the same suit. To win, a player needs to form at least two sequences, out of which at least one should be a pure sequence. If you declare hand without a pure sequence, you will lose and get penalty points.

Runs: Successive sequences of three or more cards of the same suit

Sets: Three or four cards of the same rank are called sets. If you are starting t use two decks, a set may consist of two similar cards of the same rank and suit.

Learn How to form Sequences

In Rummy, a sequence is a collection of three or more consecutive cards of a similar suit. There are two types of sequences formed:

1. a pure sequence

2. an impure sequence

To win the rummy card game, you need at least one pure sequence in your hand.

Pure Sequence

A pure sequence is a collection of three or more consecutive cards belonging to the same suit. A Joker cannot substitute any card in a particular pure sequence.

Example:

6♦-7♦-8♦ and no card has been replaced by a Joker.

A♣-2♣-3♣4♣ and no card has been replaced by a Joker.

Impure Sequence

An impure sequence is when a group of two or more successive cards of the identical suit and one or more Jokers are used as a substitute card.

3♠-4♠-8♦: The 8 of Diamonds is a wild Joker, replacing the 5 of Spades.

10♥-J♥-PJ-K♥: The printed Joker has been used to replace the Queen of Hearts.

Set

A group of cards of different suits that have the same face value is called a set. A set is valid only when it possesses 3 or 4 cards.

Typical Example of a Set of 5 cards made to complete 13 cards and make a valid declaration is:

Examples are: 2♥ 3♥ 4♥ 5♥ | 5♣ 6♣ 7♣ 8♣ | 5♦ 5♣ PJ Q♥ Q♠

Sets without a Joker Card:

Example:

7♦-7♥-7♠: This particular set has 7s from three different suits.

2♦-2♠-2♥-2♣: This set again has 2s from four different suits.

Sets with a Joker Card:

Example:

5♠-5♣-K♥: Here, the King of Hearts is a wild Joker.

9♥-9♦-9♠-PJ: In this set, the printed Joker is optional.

Q♣-PJ-Q♦: The printed Joker has been used to complete the set.

A♥-2♣-2♠: In this set, the 2s are wild Jokers.

Significance of Joker Cards

Jokers play a very crucial role in a rummy game and can help you win at different times.

There are two specific types of Joker cards used in the game. These are:

Printed Joker:

A printed Joker card has the picture of a Joker printed on it and can be used as a substitute for any missing card. It can also help you form a set or an impure sequence.

8♥-9♥-PJ (The printed Joker has replaced the 10?. It’s an impure sequence.)

2♦-2♠-PJ (In this set, the printed Joker has replaced the 2 of Clubs or Hearts).

Wild Joker:

The wild Joker is randomly picked at the beginning of the game. Like the printed Joker, the wild Joker can also be used as a substitute for any missing card and helps form an impure sequence or a set. A wild Joker can be used in a pure sequence, too but used in its original value and as a card of its original suit, not as a substitute card/Joker.

In the sequence 6♣-7♣-8♦-9♣, the 8♦ is a wild Joker. So it’s an impure sequence.

In the set 6♠-6♥-3♣, the 3♣ is a wild Joker.

Invalid Sets

The set is mandatorily formed with the same card of different suits. However, you can’t use the similar two or more cards of the same suit as this is taken as an invalid declaration. Also, note that a set can have even more than four cards. So, if you have a bunch of four cards and you are again using an additional Joker Card, then in total, it becomes a 5 cards group and it will still be a valid set. At no point in time, the hand can have more than 13 cards.

Example:

;

6♦6♥ 6♥: In this set there are two 6s of the same suit ♥ that makes it an invalid set.

7♠ 7♥ 7♦ 7♠ Q♥: This set has two 7 spades of the same suit. The wild card Q♥ as the fifth card is valid but having two 7♠ in between makes it invalid.

Making a Valid Declaration in a Rummy Card Game

Valid Declaration

To make a valid declaration, a player must fulfill the following three conditions:

Pure sequence: To win a rummy game, you must create at least one pure sequence. Any declaration made without forming at least one pure sequence is invalid. You can create more than one pure sequence too.

Second sequence: You need to form a second sequence, which can be a pure sequence or an impure sequence. Creating two sequences is mandatory, but you can also create more than that. Forming sets is optional.

All your cards should be melded: All the cards that are not part of your two sequences should be arranged in other sequences or sets. Forming sets is optional, but all your cards must be placed in series or sequences and sets.

Example:

What is an Invalid Declaration?

An invalid declaration happens in a rummy card game when the player presses the Declaration button. However, the cards are not invalid sequences and sets. In this case, the player will lose the game, and the competitor will automatically be declared the winner.

Example 1:

The declaration above is invalid because it does not have a pure sequence, and not all cards in it have been melded. Only 7 ♠ and 8♠ in the first group are from the same suit; 9♣ is from a different suit, so it is not a sequence.

Example 2:

The first group of cards is supposed to be an impure sequence, but it has one card (3♦) from a different suit. So it is not a sequence, and the declaration is invalid.

Example 3:

At least two sequences are required for a valid declaration, but the above example has only one sequence and three sets. So this is an invalid declaration.

Example 4:

This declaration is invalid because 8♥-8♠-8♥ is not a valid set as it has two cards from the same suit (♥). A set cannot have more than one card from a suit.
